Before giving any feedback it's important to set the intention for the feedback you are about to give. Does your reportee need appreciation, coaching or evaluation?
- Appreciation is straightforward and positive recognition. Did your reportee lead a great meeting today? Then you should tell them.
- Coaching is advice that will help your reportee learn and grow. Perhaps they led a project quite well but were unable manage expectations around going live dates. This is where you explain where your reportee struggled and give them advice on how to avoid it next time.
- Evaluation is when you let a reportee know where they stand. This is to let them know if they have met expectations or on track to receive the promotion you have been talking about.
